Subclass 482 New Skills in Demand (SID) Visa
As of 7 December 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa has replaced the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. This visa allows employers in Australia to address skills shortages by bringing in skilled workers when they are unable to find suitable candidates locally.
The SID visa is a temporary solution, enabling employers to sponsor skilled workers to fill roles that cannot be filled by Australian workers with the required expertise.
Three Visa Streams
- Core Skills Stream
- Key Requirements: The occupation must be listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
- Specialist Skills Stream
- Key Requirements: Your occupation must be on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) list, in Major Groups 1,2,4,5 or 6. Additionally, the salary for the role must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold.
- Labour Agreement Stream
- Key Requirements:
- Your employer must have a current labour agreement with the Australian Government.
- This stream is for skilled workers nominated by employers who have a Labour Agreement with the Australian Government. The agreement allows Australian employers to sponsor workers for specific roles under agreed conditions.
- Key Requirements:
Visa Duration
- Generally, the SID visa is valid for up to 4 years.
- Hong Kong passport holders can stay for up to 5 years.
Core Skills Stream – Eligibility
To qualify for the Core Skills Stream, you must meet the following criteria:
- No age requirement for applicants.
- If applying from within Australia, you must hold a valid visa (e.g., Substantive visa or Bridging Visa A, B, or C).
- Your employer must be a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS).
- You must be nominated for an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Before applying for the SID visa, your employer must submit a nomination application for you.
- You should have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field.
- A relevant skills assessment may be required for your occupation.
- You can only work for your sponsor or an associated entity unless exempt.
- You must meet any necessary licensing or registration requirements for your occupation in Australia and provide evidence from the relevant Australian authority.
- You must meet minimum English language proficiency requirements unless exempt.
Specialist Skills Stream – Eligibility
To qualify for the Specialist Skills Stream, you must meet the following criteria:
- No age requirement for applicants.
- If applying from within Australia, you must hold a valid visa (e.g., Substantive visa or Bridging Visa A, B, or C).
- Your employer must be a Standard Business Sponsor (SBS).
- You must be nominated on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) list, in Major Groups 1,2,4,5 or 6 with a salary that meets the Specialist Skills Income Threshold.
- You should have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field.
- A relevant skills assessment may be required for your occupation.
- You can only work for your sponsor or an associated entity unless exempt.
- You must meet any necessary licensing or registration requirements for your occupation in Australia and provide evidence from the relevant Australian authority.
- You must meet minimum English language proficiency requirements unless exempt.
English Language Exemptions
You may not need to provide English language test results if:
- You are a passport holder from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, or the USA or
- You have completed at least 5 years of full-time study in English, at a secondary level or higher or
- Your occupation requires a license or registration, and you have been granted that license or registration or
- You are an employee of an overseas business, and the business or its associated entity has nominated you for this role in Australia, with a guaranteed annual salary of at least AUD 96,400.
Including Family Members
You can include family members, known as secondary applicants, in your visa application. They will be able to join you in Australia for the duration of your visa.
